Rowdy Leatherworks is a proud subcompany of the 1 Lazy 1 Cattle Brand, crafting durable leather goods and firefighting gear—made to order, one piece at a time.
1 Lazy 1 started with Bob McClung, an old-school Texas cowhand who spent his youth riding fence on some of the biggest spreads (6666's) in the state. In the years after the war, Bob put his mark on his own gear and cattle with a brand he called 1 Lazy 1 — a nod to the lone, laid-back cowpoke who still gets the work done. The name stuck. The standard did too.
Today the ranch is in the hands of the next generation in Central Texas, raising grass-fed Wagyu on open pasture. Our Veteran-Owned ranch focuses on good grass, good water, low stress, and enough patience to let quality happen the hard way. Rowdy Leatherworks grew out of that same mindset. What started as fixing tack and building ranch gear at the kitchen table turned into a small shop turning out everyday carry pieces and firefighting leather that can hold up to weather, sweat, and real use.
We work the way we were taught on the ranch: measure twice, stitch straight, and make it last. If you spend time here you’ll meet the rest of the crew: three horses, two donkeys with strong opinions, a bunch of cattle and steers, a couple of dogs, and one cat who thinks he runs payroll.
Every good brand has a story, and ours has Rowdy — the mischievous chaos gremlin at the heart of the ranch. He’s a horse with the soul of a black lab, convinced he’s smaller and stealthier than he is. Rowdy gives unlimited kisses, follows people around like a puppy, and insists on joining whatever you’re doing… even if that means sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong.
And it always ends with trouble. He’s notorious for stealing food, beer, and smoothies the second someone looks away. His most legendary stunt — still talked about at family gatherings — is the Chicken Strip Incident, when he sauntered up during a slow afternoon and helped himself to the ranch owner's granddaughter’s lunch: chicken strips, fries, and all. He’s equally obsessed with candy, especially gummy worms and Nerds Clusters, which he’ll happily snatch from your pocket if given the chance.
When he’s not trying to eat like a human, Rowdy’s busy entertaining himself — often by trotting around the round pen or chasing donkeys with a traffic cone clamped triumphantly in his teeth. He’s the resident goofball, self-appointed ranch mascot, and constant reminder that a little mischief makes life better.
Firefighting gear isn’t fashion — it’s something you trust with your life. That’s why our firefighting leather is built the way we build for ourselves and our own. Every strap, keeper, and band starts with thick, full-grain leather that’s cut, stitched, and finished by hand. We don’t outsource the work and we don’t rush it, because the people wearing this gear aren’t strangers — they’re the same firefighters we ride beside, work beside, and come home to. From radio straps that break in like an old saddle to helmet bands, glove keepers, and shield fronts that take years of abuse without giving up, every piece is designed to last longer than the gear it’s attached to. Each one can be customized with stamping, initials, and stitching details that make it yours, not just another piece of equipment off a shelf.
We make firefighting leather because we know the people who use it — and we believe they deserve gear that works as hard as they do.
Lead times vary by workload and complexity. You’ll see an estimated ship date on your order, and we’ll update status as it moves to in progress and shipped.
